Walter Shinn retired at the conclusion of the spring season, a season in which Flagler amassed a record of 16-5 overall and 11-2 in the Peach Belt Conference. In his 35 years at the helm of the women’s program, Shinn has amassed an overall record of 536-211 and has coached his teams to five consecutive NAIA national titles (1987-88-89-90-91). He was named the NAIA Coach of the Year in each of those five seasons and was inducted into the NAIA Coaches Hall of Fame in 2000. Shinn was selected as the ITA/Wilson Coach of the Year. In the 1991-92 season, he started his 22-year career as the head men’s tennis coach, while still serving in the same capacity on the women’s side. In that time he posted a 274-159 record, with his last year coming in 2012-13. Shinn has the distinction of being one of a handful of coaches to receive the Peach Belt Conference Coach of the Year award in both men’s and women’s tennis.
