Dixson competed in the early years for the Flagler cross country program (1977-81) for coaches Ed Walkawitz and Dr. Thomas Graham. He was selected as the team’s most valuable player all four years (1977-78, 1978-79, and 1979-80, and 1980-81) in his career. Dixson won three consecutive races in 1977 and nearly missed out on a fourth when he finished in second place. He finished first in the 10,000-meter run at Florida Technical University (now UCF), with a time of 35:18. Dixson took first place in the four-mile run at Jacksonville with a time of 22:04. He won a second race at Jacksonville, at a distance of 20 kilometers, with a time of 1:10:31. Dixson qualified for the NAIA District and national meets during his time at Flagler.
