Saints set multiple NCAA provisional times in season opener

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Flagler College men's track team wrapped up their season opener at the Jimmy Carnes Invitational held at the Alachua County Sports Complex at Celebration Pointe this afternoon.

Competing in six total events, the Saints faced a multitude of institutions ranging from NCAA Division II such as Florida Institute of Technology and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University and NAIA schools such as Voorhees University and Warner University. Flagler competed in six events, the 60, 200, 400, 800, 3000 and 4x400 meter dash and cracked the top five in the 800, 3K and 4x400.

The Saints found the most success in the 800 meter dash where they occupied the first, second and third spots. Kaleb Hollins led the charge as he set a new indoor personal best time with his 1:50.75 finish. Placing second was Will Stone in 1:51.24 followed by John Carbone in 1:51.48. In their first race of the season, the trio set NCAA provisional times, surpassing the 1:52.01 threshold.

The 3K saw Finn Russell and Jack Waters take second and third overall. Placing a new personal record, Russell missed the NCAA provisional mark by a mere 12 seconds, placing a time of 8:16.53. Waters competed in his first indoor event of his collegiate career, setting his standard at 8:25.01.

In sprinting events, Xander Cunningham missed the top-10 by one spot, placing 11th in 51.88. Cunningham was followed close behind by Malik Edwards who placed 12th in 51.91. In the 60 meter preliminaries, Sam Adebonojo narrowly missed the finals by .01 of a second, tied for ninth with a 7.15 finish.

In the final event of the meet, the 4x400, the squad of Stone, Hollins, Carbone and Kaleb Atkins placed fifth overall in 3:27.09. Off by a second was the team of Edwards, Jared McDowell, Cunningham and Evan McDowell who placed seventh in 3:28.10.

The Saints will return to the track next week on Jan. 23 and 24 for the Alachua County Invitational.
