ST. AUGUSTINE –
George Gilson had a career day going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, five runs batted in, four runs scored, and he was walked intentionally three times to help lead Flagler College to a 16-6 win over Claflin University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field on "Senior Day."
Flagler improved to 29-14 overall and 16-10 in the Peach Belt. Claflin dropped to 4-32 overall and 1-25 in conference play. The two teams will conclude the weekend series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Saints scored two in the first, one in the second, and two more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.
The Panthers scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap, but the Saints batted around in the home half of the inning and scored five more runs. Gilson hit a two-run double to help the cause.
Flagler added six runs in the eighth inning to end the game. The game wrapped up when the Claflin pitcher uncorked a wild pitch with the bases loaded to invoke the 10-run rule.
Brayden Matthews (4-4), one of 12 senior baseball players honored before the game, allowed three unearned runs on six hits in five innings pitched to get the win. He fanned a season-high eight batters.
Eli Maddox, another senior, went 3-for-6 with a double, a season-high five RBI, and he scored a run.
AJ Hunerberg finished 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and one RBI.
Payton Palladino, a senior, went 3-for-4 with a double, three runs scored, and he had a run batted in.
Olin Evans (1-3) surrendered 10 runs on 12 hits in 4.2 innings pitched for Claflin.
Devon Whitehead hit two doubles, drove in four runs, and scored another for the Panthers. Christian Hall collected two singles and knocked in a run.
