ST. AUGUSTINE –
George Gilson capped off a massive weekend going 4-for-5 as he hit for the cycle, scored four runs, and he drove in four more as Flagler College rolled to a 23-3 victory over Claflin University in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 30-14 overall and 17-10 in the Peach Belt. Claflin dropped to 4-33 overall and 1-26 in conference play. The Saints step out of conference play and head to Jacksonville to face Edward Waters University on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Gilson was the fifth Flagler player to hit for the cycle in a game, and the first to do it since Ethan Crout who did it on March 18, 2018 against Augusta University. Tyler Vanover had his cycle vs. Florida Memorial University on April 27, 2013, and Kenny Ray had his on Feb. 20, 2007 against Valdosta State University. John McMahon was the first player to hit for the cycle in 1980.
After spotting the Panthers a run in the top of the first, the Saints answered with two in the home-half of the inning. Flagler blew the game wide open with a seven-run second inning sending 12 men to the plate.
The Saints added four runs in the third, two more in the fifth and sixth innings, and six more in the sixth.
Gilson hit an RBI-single in the second, a double in the third, an RBI-triple in the fifth, and a three-run home run in the sixth. His home run tied a Division II era record as it was his 12
th of the season. He shares the record with James Jean (2016). Gilson surpassed the D2 era record for runs batted in for a season with 63. He broke Jason Moore's record of 60 in 2018. During Friday's game, he broke the D2 era stolen base record and currently has 31. Trey Newland held the record (28) in 2024.
Eli Maddox went 2-for-4 with a double, four runs batted in, and he scored a run.
AJ Hunerberg tied a D2 era record with five runs scored in a game as collected a pair of doubles and drove in two runs.
Matt Anthony finished with two doubles, two RBI, and he scored a run. Tyler Shultz collected two singles, scored three runs and knocked in two more while
Jesse Sullivan hit two singles, scored two runs, and he drove in two more.
Drew Rosenberg (4-0) tossed four scoreless innings in relief and scattered four hits to get the win for Flagler.
Devyn Campbell was a home run shy of the cycle for Claflin. He scored a run.
Xavier Campbell (0-5) took the loss after surrendering nine runs on eight hits in two innings of work.
