ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College was hitless for the first 6.2 innings but managed to rally and come up short in the end, 4-2, to Florida Southern College in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler had its three-game winning streak halted and dropped to 15-7. Florida Southern won its eighth game in a row and improved to 12-11. Up next for the Saints is a three-game series at Lander University, which starts Friday at 5 p.m.
The Saints trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the eighth inning.
Parker Stallard hit a slow roller back to the mound and Florida Southern reliever Heath Clevenger threw the ball down the right field line. Stallard was able to advance to second base. Pinch hitter
Nathan Shaffer reached on an infield single to put runners on the corners with two outs. Shaffer drew a throw to second base on a stolen base attempt and Stallard took advantage and scored from third on the throw to complete the double steal.
The Mocs were able to plate two more runs in the top of the ninth for insurance.
Jayce Rollins (2-0) tossed five hitless innings and walked just one batter with two strikeouts. He retired the last 14 batters he faced in a row. Robert Tracy notched his first save of the season as he got the last two outs of the ninth.
Eli Thurmond went 4-for-4 with a double and he scored two runs. Ryan Jenkins collected two singles, scored two runs, and finished with two runs batted in. Mikey Scott singled twice and drove in a run.
Brayden Matthews (1-3) allowed one earned run on four hits in 5.2 innings pitched for the Saints. He struck out six batters, which tied his season high.
Tripp Davis broke up the no-hitter with a triple to right-center in the seventh inning.
