GREENWOOD, S.C. – Lander University scored a pair of runs in each of the last two innings to defeat Flagler College 7-5 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday evening at Stephen B. Dolny Stadium.
Lander improved to 15-9 overall and 9-4 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 15-8 overall and 5-5 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.
The Saints held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. A pair of one-out infield singles started the Bearcat rally. Caden Crews scored from third on a ground out to shortstop and Ryan Hansen scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
Mason Salisbury led off the Lander eighth with an infield single. Oliver Zohn followed with a base hit, but Caleb McKitrick's bunt went back to the pitcher's mound where Flagler reliever,
Logan Brown (2-1), gathered the ball and got the force out at third base. A ground out moved the runners up a base, but a pair of wild pitches scored the go-ahead runs.
Joshua Sanchez (1-1) got out of trouble in the top of the ninth when he got
Trenton Snyder to line out the centerfield with two runners on base. There was one out when this happened. Flagler's runner at first base had rounded the bag at second, but had to backtrack when the catch was made. On appeal, the runner was ruled out and the game ended.
Zohn and Crews each collected two singles for Lander. Crews scored two runs.
Brown allowed two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings pitched for Flagler.
Snyder led the Saints with three singles, two runs scored, and one run batted in.
Jesse Sullivan hit two doubles and drove in a run.
