ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. –Flagler College unleashed its offense as it scored 32 runs on 30 hits in a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Eckerd College, 15-10 and 17-7, Saturday at the Turley Athletic Complex.
Flagler improved to 2-1 while Eckerd dropped to 1-2. The Saints play their home opening series this upcoming weekend as Mars Hill University comes to the Ancient City for a three-game series starting on Friday at 5 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
The Saints batted .380 as a team in the doubleheader and the pitching staff held a 4.00 earned run average.
In the opener, Flagler broke open a 6-all tie with a seven-run eighth inning. The Saints sent 11 men to the plate and had six hits.
Parker Stallard hit a two-run double in the frame, which capped a string of four consecutive hits by Flagler batters.
The Saints added two more in the top of the ninth and held on for the 15-10 win.
Karson Kennedy went 3-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in.
George Gilson,
Eli Maddox,
Payton Palladino, and
Patrick Mazzamaro each collected two hits apiece.
Brayden Matthews (1-0) tossed five innings in relief and allowed one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts.
Aaron Zenus started while
Logan Brown and
Parker Adams both worked in relief after Matthews.
Hunter Rebhan went 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Cody Hodierne collected three singles, scored two runs, and drove in another.
JD Hay (0-1) took the loss in relief. He allowed five runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.
The Saints trailed 6-5 going into the top of the seventh.
Tripp Davis' single up the middle tied the game at 6-all, then a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring pinch hit single by
Jesse Sullivan staked Flagler to an 8-6 lead.
Flagler erupted for four more in the eighth and five more in the ninth to put the game away.
Justin Haskins hit a two-run single in the eighth, and Tyler Shultz hit an RBI-triple in the ninth.
Jackson Graden (1-0) tossed two innings in relief and allowed an unearned run on two hits to get the win.
Garrett Wright started while
Drew Rosenberg and Haskins closed out the game.
Hodierne finished with three singles to lead the Tritons. He scored a run and drove in two more. Ean Grimson and Rebhan both collected two hits.
Brian Elrich (0-1), the fourth of nine different Eckerd pitchers in the game, allowed two runs on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.
