ST. AUGUSTINE –
AJ Hunerberg had a big night with two home runs, three runs scored, and five runs batted in to help Flagler College power past Mars Hill University 13-8 in a non-conference baseball game Friday evening at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its third game in a row and improved to 3-1 on the season. Mars Hill fell to 0-3. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. This was the second consecutive home opener the Saints have won.
After spotting the Lions a run in the top of the second, the Saints scored a pair of unearned runs in the home half of that inning and then Hunerberg blasted a two-run home run well over the left field wall in the third to give Flagler a 4-1 lead.
Hunerberg struck again in the fifth with a three-run shot to left field. The Saints added three more runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Mars Hill, a member of the South Atlantic Conference, did not go down without a fight. Chapel Matson hit a three-run home run to left field in the eighth, and he hit a three-run shot down the left field line in the top of the ninth.
CJ Hanson (1-1) scattered six hits over five innings of work and allowed two runs with four strikeouts. He only allowed four base runners in his five innings of work and induced seven fly outs to go along with three ground outs.
Brayden Matthews tossed two innings;
Logan Brown added an inning and a third while
Justin Haskins closed the game and got the last two outs.
Flagler's first four hitters in the lineup went 8-for-17 with three doubles, two home runs, eight runs scored, and seven RBI.
Taylor Shultz hit two singles and scored three runs. Gilson went 2-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and he drove in another. Maddox hit two doubles, scored two runs, and knocked in a run.
Payton Palladino had two infield singles, scored two runs, and finished with one RBI.
Austin Kutz (0-1) allowed five earned runs on six hits in five innings of work. Gavin Hug, Brayden Reynolds, Cameron Brown, and Isaiah Slaven all pitched in relief.
Matson hit two home runs and drove in seven. Alejandro Aguilar went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored two runs. Carter Potts collected a pair of singles.
