ST. AUGUSTINE –
Brayden Matthews (3-3) tossed five innings, allowed one run on three hits, and struck out four to help Flagler College knock off No. 13 (ABCA Division II Top 30) Rollins College 4-1 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday evening at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its fifth game in a row to improve to 23-11 overall while Rollins fell to 20-9. This was the fourth win in a row over the Tars at Drysdale Field, by the Saints, and all four times Rollins has been nationally ranked. Flagler welcomes Georgia College & State University to the Ancient City for a three-game series starting Thursday at 6 p.m.
The Saints got on the board first as
George Gilson laced an RBI-double to left field and then came around to score on a squeeze bunt by
Jesse Sullivan.
The Tars finally got a run in the fifth, but that was all they were going to get off Saints pitching.
Sullivan hit a two-run double in the eighth for insurance.
After a rocky start, Matthews settled in and retired 11 of 12 hitters.
Logan Brown,
Keegan Leckband,
Jackson Graden, and
Parker Adams were nearly flawless in relief as they only allowed one base runner in the last four innings. Adams recorded his fifth save.
The first four hitters in Flagler's lineup went 8-for-15 and scored three runs. Gilson led the way going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.
Taylor Shultz,
AJ Hunerberg, and
Eli Maddox all collected two singles apiece. Sullivan drove in three runs.
Jack Haynes (1-1) allowed two runs on three hits to get the loss on the mound. The Tars used seven different pitchers.
Michael Furry hit an RBI single for Rollins in the fifth inning.
