ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College scored an unearned run in the bottom of eighth inning and got a complete game out of
Brayden Matthews (2-3) to defeat Edward Waters University 2-1 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 17-9 overall. Edward Waters dropped to 13-13. Up next for the Saints is a three-game series at No. 11 (ABCA Division II Top 30) University of North Georgia, which starts Friday at 5 p.m.
Matthews scattered four hits and allowed one run with five strikeouts to earn the complete game victory. He tossed 103 pitches and retired the first 14-of-15 batters he faced. Matthews induced 12 ground outs and nine fly outs.
The Flagler eighth got started when
Holden Bradshaw was hit by a pitch with one out. A ground out moved him to second base.
Cael Reish hit an infield single to third base, which allowed Bradshaw to move up. But the throw to first base got away, and Bradshaw was able to score.
The Tigers had runners on the corners with two outs in the top of the ninth when Angelo Prieto lifted a ball to right-center field.
George Gilson made a diving catch to end the game.
Eli Maddox hit a run-scoring single back in the first inning.
Tripp Davis collected a pair of singles for the Saints.
Rowdy Sowers (0-1) took the loss in relief. The fourth pitcher used by Edward Waters, he allowed the unearned run on one hit with one strikeout in one inning.
Four different Tigers hit a single. Only three base runners reached scoring position and one scored.
