GREENWOOD, S.C. – Lander University scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Flagler College 4-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Stephen B. Dolny Stadium.
Lander improved to 16-10 overall and 10-5 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 16-9 overall and 6-6 in the Peach Belt. Up next for the Saints is a non-conference game on Tuesday against Edward Waters University at 5 p.m. at Drysdale Field.
Brody Winter got things started in the seventh when he drew a one-out walk. A bunt to try to advance Winter turned into being a hit for Oliver Zohn. The next batter drew a walk to load the bases. After a strikeout got the Saints one out from getting out of a jam, Caden Crews drew a walk to give the Bearcats a 3-2 lead. Ryan Hansen reached on an error and another run scored before the next batter struck out.
The Saints had runners at second and third in the top of the eighth, but couldn't get them home.
Evan Demurias (2-2), the second of four Lander pitchers, was credited with the win. He allowed one run on five hits in five innings pitched. Joshua Sanchez tossed the final two innings and did not allow a run to pick up the save.
Pip Smalley, Zohn, and Cooper Backman each collected two hits.
Jackson Graden (2-2) took the loss in relief for the Saints. He allowed one earned run on one hit and walked three with two strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched.
Aaron Zenus started while
Logan Brown and
Parker Adams also pitched in relief.
George Gilson collected three singles while
AJ Hunerberg added two more.
