GREENWOOD, S.C. – Lander University had the tying run 90 feet away with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning but couldn't get the run home as Flagler College held on for a 6-5 win in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Stephen B. Dolny Stadium.
Flagler improved to 16-8 overall and 6-5 in the Peach Belt. Lander dropped to 15-10 overall and 9-5 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 12 p.m. in the rubber game of the series
The Saints held a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the seventh inning. A pair of one-out infield singles started the Bearcat rally. Caden Crews scored from third on a ground out to shortstop and Ryan Hansen scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.
A bases loaded walk and hit by pitch in the top of the sixth gave the Saints a 4-2 lead.
George Gilson's RBI single in the eighth staked Flagler to a 5-2 lead. After
Tripp Davis hit a one-out single in the ninth,
Parker Stallard came on to pinch run. Stallard stole second and then took third on an errant throw.
Payton Palladino hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Stallard with the insurance run.
Lander trailed 6-3 going into the home half of the ninth. With one out, Caden Crews hit a triple down the right field line. He scored on Ryan Hansen's infield single. Hansen took second after pinch hitter Caleb McKitrick was hit by a pitch. Two batters later, Brody Winter hit a single to left to score Hansen and Flagler led just 6-5 with runners on the corners. But Brady Matthews got the last batter to foul out to first base to end the game.
Garrett Wright (3-1) allowed two runs on three hits in six innings. He added seven strikeouts in the win. Matthews recorded his first save.
Davis collected a pair of singles for Flagler and scored two runs.
Holden Bradshaw singled twice, scored a run, and drove in two more. Palladino hit two singles and drove in a run.
Jake Monroe (1-2) took the loss after allowing two earned runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.
Zach Cowart went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and two runs batted in. Winter finished with two singles and one RBI.
