ST. AUGUSTINE – Like in Saturday's game, Flagler College rode a five-run first inning, but this time won 9-3 to complete the weekend sweep of Mars Hill University Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its fifth game in a row and improved to 5-1. Mars Hill is still looking for its first win as it stands at 0-5. The Saints hit the road for four consecutive games starting with Tuesday's contest at 6 p.m. at Florida Tech in Melbourne.
The Saints trailed 2-0 going into the bottom of the first inning. Three straight walks to start the inning allowed Flagler to load the bases.
Eli Maddox hit a sacrifice fly to plate the first run, and
Cael Reish hit a two-run single to give the Saints a 3-2 edge. Later, a sacrifice fly to left field scored another run, and a throwing error by the left fielder allowed another run to score.
That was more than enough support
Garrett Wright (1-0) would need. He allowed two runs on four hits in six innings of work to secure the win. Wright retired 17 of the last 19 batters he faced. He induced 12 fly outs and four more ground balls.
Evan Scott and
Parker Adams finished up in relief.
Jesse Sullivan paced the Flagler offensive attack with three singles.
AJ Hunerberg collected a pair of singles and scored two runs while Reish had two hits, two runs batted in, and he scored a run.
Payton Palladino belted a two-run home run in the fifth and finished with three RBI.
Collin Chappel (0-1) tossed one-third of an inning and gave up three earned runs on one hit to go along with three walks to take the loss for the Lions.
Gavyn Miller collected two singles, and Alejandro Aguilar started the game with a home run.
