Hanson ties a school record as the Saints sweep twinbill

ST. AUGUSTINE – CJ Hanson struck out 16 batters which tied the school record as Flagler College edged American International College 3-2 in the second game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field. Flagler won the opener, 9-8.

Flagler improved to 10-2 overall while American International lost its season openers. The same two teams meet on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Hanson, who did not figure in the decision, scattered seven hits, allowed one earned run, walked two batters to go along with the 16 strikeouts in eight innings of work. The last Flagler player to strike out that many hitters in a game was Dave Weithman who accomplished the feat in 1989. Hanson threw 131 pitches with 88 being strikes. He struck out five in a row, including all three batters looking in the fourth inning. His 16 strikeouts are the most this season by an NCAA pitcher at any level.

The was tied at 2-all going into the bottom of the ninth inning. Payton Palladino hit a leadoff single, and the next two batters were hit by a pitch to load the bases. Two batters later, George Gilson hit a single to left-center to end the game.

Palladino collected three singles and scored the game-winning run.

Jacob Newman (1-0) got the win in relief. He tossed two-thirds of an inning and struck out a batter.

Cole Patterson led the Yellow Jackets with three singles.

Brandon Morrison (0-1) pitched the last 1.1 innings and took the loss. He allowed one run on two hits.

In the opener, the Saints used a six-run sixth inning to wipe out a 4-2 AIC lead. Gilson hit a grand slam to wake up the Flagler bats in the frame. He finished 2-for-3 with five runs batted in.

Trenton Snyder and Palladino each collected two singles.

Logan Brown (1-0) earned the win in relief. He allowed three runs on three hits in 4.1 innings pitched. He struck out two. Parker Adams was credited with his first save of the season as he got the last two outs of the game.

Alex Dye was a perfect 3-for-3 with three singles and was hit by a pitch in his fourth at bat. He scored a run and drove in two more. Patterson finished with three singles and two runs scored for AIC.

Kyle Pena (0-1) allowed four runs without giving up a hit. He walked two and hit a batter.
