COLUMBUS, Ga. –
George Gilson and
Trenton Snyder each had five hits today to help Flagler College split a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Columbus State University, 12-7 in the opener and 6-5 in game two, Saturday afternoon at Burger King Stadium at Ragsdale Field. The Cougars had a game-ending RBI-single to win the second game.
Flagler leaves with an 8-2 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the Peach Belt. The last time the Saints won a series against the Cougars was in 2019 when Flagler swept all three games at Drysdale Field. Columbus State is now 2-7 overall and 1-2 in league play. Flagler welcomes American International College to the Ancient City for a four-game series starting with a noon doubleheader this Saturday.
In the first game, the Saints scored single tallies in each of the first three innings and held a 3-1 lead after three complete.
Flagler added two more in the fifth on a pair of sacrifice flies to take a 5-2 lead.
The Saints led 6-4 in the top of the seventh. Gilson belted a two-run home run to left field and later,
Tripp Davis scored two on a single to center.
Jackson Graden (3-0) earned the win in relief as he weathered a rally attempt by the Cougars. He allowed four runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.
Aaron Zenus started and tossed two-plus innings before giving way to
Drew Rosenberg who went two-plus innings.
Justin Haskins tossed two-thirds of an inning.
Gilson finished 3-for-5 with the home run, a double, three runs batted in, and he scored two runs. Davis collected three singles, scored a run, and drove in two more.
Taylor Shultz finished with three singles, and he scored three runs.
Connor Michel (0-3) took the loss on the hill for Columbus State. He surrendered three earned runs on seven hits in four-plus innings of work.
Jax Yoxtheimer went 3-for-6 with a triple, a run scored, and one more driven in for the Cougars. Cole Eison finished 3-for-6 with a double, a home run, two RBI, and he scored two runs. Corey Berry went 3-for-6 with a triple, and he scored a run.
In the second game, Columbus State scored two runs in the eighth to tie the score at 5-all. A pair of one out singles in the ninth set up a game-winning single to center by Jackson Chizek. He finished the game going 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBI, and he scored twice.
Dexter Benoit (1-0) picked up the win in relief. He tossed a scoreless ninth inning. He was the last of eight pitchers to work in the game for Columbus State.
Brayden Matthews (1-1) took the loss in relief for Flagler. He allowed three runs on four hits in 2.2 innings.
Garrett Wright started and tossed 5.2 innings.
Snyder collected three singles and scored a run to lead the Saints. Gilson finished 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI, and he scored a pair of runs.
Parker Stallard had a pair of singles, scored two runs, and drove in another.
