ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College men's soccer team had one of its best seasons in years posting a 12-5-3 overall record, which included a Peach Belt Conference Tournament title and an NCAA Division II Tournament appearance.
Head coach
Thomas Coombes begins his fourth season with Flagler and sees 11 players with experience as a starter on this year's roster. There are 17 newcomers this season.
"Over half the team is brand new so we will rely on the returners to keep the culture and the standards that we set last year," said Coombes.
Two of his key returnees were in their first year in the program –
Gustav Moberg and
Reiss Skeen. Both transferred in last year from NCAA Division I programs. Skeen came from Saint Peter's University in New Jersey and led the Saints with 18 points (six goals and six assists). He earned first team All-PBC honors and was a D2CCA All-Southeast Region selection. Moberg played in all 20 matches after coming to Flagler from Missouri State University. He scored two goals and tallied two assists in 1,390 minutes.
Forwards
Boston College transfer
Henry Okenla along with
Finn Weigelt, who earned first team all-conference honors, are expected to lead this group. Weigelt tied for the team-lead in goals with six. A couple of transfers –
Tim Wahlborg (Limestone University) and
John McGarry (Radford University) – are both strong players who will pressure opponent defenses.
River Beeman has three years under his belt with the program and
Luke Williams, who scored three goals and tied for the team-lead in assists with six, returns for his third season.
Midfielders
Skeen and Moberg lead this crew as captains. University of Findlay transfer
Oliver Lindstrom joins the team after earning first team All-Great Midwest Conference honors last year.
Hugues Iguaran, a freshman, will push for time in an experienced midfield.
Defenders
Alberto Ontiveros and
Camilo Vera will look to anchor Flagler's back four. Ontiveros started 14 matches last year and Vera saw time in all 20 matches. A pair of transfers -
Owen Cunha (University of North Florida) and
Daniel Becerra (Limestone University) – give the Saints plenty of experience as defenders. Becerra played on a very successful Limestone team that made some deep runs in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Filip Hornburg,
Lenz Trubenbacher,
Ryan Berger, and
Mitchell Claxton, all freshmen, will compete for spots.
Goalkeepers
Coombes has a group of four goalkeepers, which he says are the best he has seen in his time at Flagler.
Ryan Rivas leads the quartet as he finished with a 1.16 goals against average and had eight clean sheets.
Nico Mejia, who backed up Rivas last year, saw limited time but had 13 shutouts as a freshman at Oglethorpe University. Dylan Beierman did not play last year, but had an excellent prep career in Nebraska.
Trevor Senzon, a freshman, is coming off a great senior season at Suncoast High School where he broke the Florida record for saves in a season with 137.
Flagler was selected as the preseason favorite by the Peach Belt coaches and open the season Thursday evening at Barry University.
