Flagler picked as the preseason favorite in the PBC

Four Saints named to preseason all-conference team

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Flagler College men's soccer team was picked as the favorite according to the Peach Belt Conference's preseason coaches' poll, released this morning by conference officials. Alex Alexandrou, Gustav Moberg, Reiss Skeen, and Finn Weigelt were selected to the preseason all-conference team.

The Saints tallied 31 points and picked up one first place vote. They edged out defending regular season champion Clayton State University by one point. The Lakers received three first place votes and tallied 30 points. The University of North Georgia was picked to finish third and received two first place votes and had 29 points. Lander University took home the other first place vote and collected 20 points. Georgia Southwestern State University follows in fifth place with 17 points and USC Aiken is sixth with 14 points. League newcomer Middle Georgia State University rounds out the teams with six points.

Flagler posted a 12-5-3 overall record last year and went 6-3-1 in PBC play. The Saints finished in a tie for second place with North Georgia and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 after winning the PBC Tournament title.

Thomas Coombes, who enters his fourth season at the helm of the Saints program, returns 13 players from last year's club, including five starters. Alexandrou earned second team all-conference honors in his first collegiate season. He scored five goals and tallied four assists for 14 points. Moberg, a redshirt junior, was named to the PBC All-Tournament team in his first season with the Saints. He scored two goals and tallied two assists. Skeen led Flagler in points last year as he scored six goals and had six assists for 18 points. He was a first team all-conference selection, was named to the all-tournament team, and was a second team D2CCA All-Southeast Region honoree. Weigelt finished four points behind Skeen with 14 as he scored six goals and tallied two assists. He took home first team all-conference accolades and was a third team United Soccer Coaches All-Southeast Region selection.

The Saints open the season at Barry University on Sept. 4 at 5 p.m. at Miami Shores, Florida. The home opener is Sept. 9 against Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 6 p.m. at Saints Field.
