GREENWOOD, S.C. – With runners at second and third and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Georgia College & State University's Carson Phillips hit a game-ending single up the middle in an 8-7 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference Baseball Tournament game late Friday night at Stephen B. Dolny Stadium.
The game's start time was pushed from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. due to weather delays in the previous game.
Flagler, the No. 6 seed dropped to 30-19 overall and faces USC Aiken at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in an elimination game. Georgia College, the No. 3 seed, improved to 29-22 and will take on Lander University at noon in a winner's bracket game.
The bottom of the ninth started with an infield single by Ben Hamacher. After a strikeout, Evan Cowan hit a single to shortstop. Hamacher advanced to second but then went to third on an errant throw by the Flagler shortstop and Cowan took second. Phillips hit a 1-1 pitch back up the middle to end the game as Hamacher scored the winning run.
Christian Donaldson (4-5) tossed two scoreless innings in relief for the Bobcats to get the win. He walked two and fanned six.
Philipps went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and he had three runs batted in. Cowan collected three singles, scored a run, and drove in another. Matthew Mebane went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and knocked in four runs. Hamacher finished 2-for-4 with a double and he scored two runs.
Ethan Bobo (3-3) took the loss for the Saints. He tossed two innings, allowed an unearned run, on three hits, and he struck out four batters.
Ben Stubbs started and last 2.1 innings before
Cooper Smith tossed the next four.
Carson Page went 3-for-4 and was a triple shy of the cycle. He scored two runs and drove in two more.
Taylor Shultz went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI, and he scored a run.
