TEMPE, Ariz. - The Flagler College men's tennis team received the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year, Senior Player of the Year and Player to Watch award Monday afternoon, according to organization officials.
For the second time in his career, Brian Washburn was named the Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Washburn and head coach
Jonas Piibor helped guide the Saints to their second-consecutive Peach Belt Conference Tournament and regular-season titles. For three consecutive weeks, and four weeks total, the Saints were ranked No. 2 in the nation. Currently the Saints are ranked at No. 4.
Capping off a record year,
Baptiste Mercier was named the ITA Southeast Region Senior Player of the Year. Currently No. 37 in singles, Mercier climbed all the way to No. 30 for two weeks in the spring. Prior to the start of the spring, Mercier was ranked No. 20 after he competed in the ITA Southeast Regional. The first team All-PBCÂ selection finished the season with a 14-5 record in singles. Ilian Borlee, the duo went 5-1 and with
Aly El Rafie, they were 12-4.
For the first time in his career,
Simon Malis is named the ITA Southeast Region Player to Watch. Earlier this season, the sophomore was named the PBC Player of the Year. Currently ranked No. 31 in singles, Malis peaked at No. 27 for two consecutive weeks. With an overall record of 24-4, Malis finished with a dual record of 18-2 with four of those being against ranked opponents. In doubles, Malis was 26-6; 5-1 with
Aniss Rafiq and 21-5 with Borlee.
