GREENWOOD, S.C. –
Jack Pilla scored five goals for No. 6 (USILA Division 2 Top 25) Flagler College but it wasn't enough as Lander University won 14-9 in a Peach Belt Conference men's lacrosse game at Van Taylor Stadium.
The Saints are 12-2 overall and 2-1 in the Peach Belt. This loss ended an 11-game winning streak. The Bearcats improved to 8-6 overall and 3-0 in the conference. Lander won the league title and will host the conference tournament next Thursday and Saturday.
Lander dominated the first quarter, creating a 7-2 lead, thanks to Michael Mattaliano, who scored four of his five goals for Lander in the first quarter.
The Saints attempted to close the gap, having the highest scoring quarter in the second quarter. Pilla managed a hat trick for the Saints and
Tyler Douglass scored one of his two goals.
Despite this effort, the Bearcats never let go of their lead. They had two goalies play in the game, however Nicholas Paige led with six saves.
Although they fell short in the end,
Josh Stevens made three saves for Flagler and
Matt Mitrega won six face-offs.
The Saints will return for the PBC tournament semifinal game on April 24 as the No. 2 seed and will take on the No. 3 seed University of Montevallo.
