ST. AUGUSTINE –
Eli Maddox belted a game-ending two-run home run as Flagler College defeated USC Beaufort 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday evening at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 28-15 overall and evened its Peach Belt record to 12-11. USC Beaufort dropped to 8-33 overall and 4-19 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. to wrap up the series. "Senior Day" festivities begin at noon.
The Saints had only mustered three hits in the first eight innings.
Caden Kresak got the bottom of the ninth started with a one-out double to the left-center field gap.
Bryce Fitzgerald came in to run for Kresak at second. Maddox hit a 2-2 pitch down the left field line and over the fence to end the game. He finished the game 2-for-3 with the home run and two runs batted in.
Ethan Bobo (3-1) tossed 1.2 scoreless innings in relief to get the win. He struck out two-of-the-five batters he faced.
Cooper Smith started and tossed 7.1 innings.
Matt Navarro (1-1) took the loss in relief for the Sand Sharks. He allowed two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning.
Noah Campbell and Cooper McDaniel each collected two singles.
