ST. AUGUSTINE - The No. 5-ranked (ITA Division II Top 50) Flagler College women's tennis team defeated Peach Belt Conference opponent, No. 44 Augusta University 7-0 this afternoon at the Pollard Tennis Center.
Flagler moved up to 17-4 on the season and 4-1 in the Peach Belt while Augusta dropped to 13-6 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Saints conclude their regular season tomorrow, against Georgia Southwestern State University at 1 p.m.
In doubles, the Saints played to clinch, causing
Sofia Balsera and
Adela Latalova's match against Julieta Palma and Priscilla Landi to go unfinished. Before the stoppage, the Saints were up 4-2. The two winning matches both came from 6-1 sets.
Laura Jipescu and
Eryka Kruk defeated Camila Taborga and Giovanna Patrocinio first, while No. 6
Dana Heimen and
Anastasia Nikolova defeated Andrea Gonzalez and Juliana Martinez for the clinch.
To start singles off, No. 47 Nikolova took the first win, handily defeating Martinez 6-1 and 6-0. Latalova kicked off her singles match hot, sweeping Luciana Bejarano 6-0 and 6-0. To secure the team win, No. 7 Heimen defeated Andrea Gonzalez 6-1 and 6-2. Playing on court six for the first time this season, Jipescu gained her win against Patrocino 6-3 and 6-2. Balsera had the only three set match of the day, facing off against Taborga. Taking set one 6-2, Balsera finished the match with a 1-0 (10-6) third set. Playing a tie break, Kruk defeated Landi 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) to give the Saints their last win.
