ST. AUGUSTINE - The No. 4-ranked (ITA Division II Top 50) Flagler College women's tennis team shut out Edward Waters University, 7-0, for their 'Senior Night' match at the Pollard Tennis Center Saturday night.
The Saints improved to 16-4 on the year while the Tigers dropped to 5-15. The Saints will return to the court next week to face Augusta University on April 17 at 10 a.m.
In doubles, Edward Waters forfeited at No. 3, awarding
Sofia Balsera and
Adela Latalova an automatic win.
Laura Jipescu and
Eryka Kruk swept Lara Viehrig and Andrea Rodriquez 6-0 to send give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Playing through their match, No. 4
Dana Heimen and
Anastasia Nikolova defeated Giulia Peres and Aalisha Alexis 6-1.
After the conclusion of doubles play, the Saints took an intermission to conduct their "Senior Night" ceremony. The two seniors that were honored was
Dana Heimen and
Laura Jipescu. Both transferred in as sophomore and through their careers, helped contribute tremendously for the Saints. Heimen and Jipescu were pivital in the Saints historic NCAA tournament run where they made it as far as the semi final round of the tournament.
Singles had the Tigers forfeit at No. 6, awarding
Polya Nikolova an automatic win. In the remaining matches, three Saints swept their opponents. The first 6-0 sweep came from Jipescu against Nadja Dzeletovic. Following was second 6-0 sweep from Kruk against Viehrig. The final came from Balsera over Rodriquez. No. 35
Anastasia Nikolova took set one 6-0 against Alexis, then 6-1 in set two. The final win of the day came from No. 2 Heimen against Peres, 6-1, 6-3.
