Saints lose to No. 16 Nighthawks in heart-breaking fashion Sunday

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Trailing 7-5 going into the bottom of the ninth inning, No. 16 (ABCA Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia scored three runs to defeat Flagler College 8-7 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Bob Stein Stadium.

North Georgia improved to 30-11 overall and 18-3 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 26-15 overall and 10-11 in conference play. Flagler hosts USC Beaufort in a three-game series starting Thursday at 5 p.m.

The Saints erupted for a seven-run eighth inning to take a 7-5 lead. Jaden Ross hit a two-run single back up the middle in that frame.

Andrews Opata led off the ninth for the Nighthawks with a double to left-center. Jake Prince's single to center was enough to score Opata and North Georgia trailed by one, 7-6. A hit batter followed by a fly out put runners on the corners for UNG. Kyle Robitzsch hit an infield single to tie the game. Jorge Arispuro followed with a game-ending single to center that scored Phillip Ard from second base.

Connor Harris (2-0) picked up the win in relief as he pitched a scoreless ninth with one strikeout.

Arispuro finished with three singles, one run batted in, and he scored three runs. Riley Frost went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI. Opata singled, doubled, scored a run, and knocked in another. Prince hit two singles, drove in two runs, and scored another. Robitzsch went 2-for-4 with a double, one RBI, and he scored a run.

Ethan Bobo (2-1) allowed four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings. He tied his career best with six strikeouts. Daniel Fischer started and surrendered four runs on six hits with six strikeouts in five innings of work.

Taylor Shultz went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI, and he scored a run. George Gilson finished 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and he knocked in a run.
