DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Phillip Ard led off the seventh inning with a home run to help lead No. 16 (ABCA Division II Top 25) University of North Georgia to a 7-4 win over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday evening at Bob Stein Stadium.
North Georgia improved to 28-11 overall and 16-3 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 26-13 overall and 10-9 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.
The Saints tied the score at 4-all after
Eli Maddox hit an RBI-double to left field, scoring
Jesse Sullivan who had hit a double before Maddox and then went to third on a passed ball.
Keegan Leckband (0-1) came on to pitch in relief of Flagler starter
Ben Stubbs in the bottom of the seventh. The third pitch he threw to Ard became the home run that put the Nighthawks ahead. An RBI-double by Jake Prince and a sacrifice fly accounted for the other two runs.
Connor Harris (1-0) earned the win in relief for North Georgia. He allowed one run on two hits in three innings of work and only threw 26 pitches. Matthew Heard closed the game as he tossed 2.2 scoreless innings and scattered four hits with three strikeouts to earn his third save.
Ard finished 2-for-4 with the home run and three runs batted in. Andrews Opata collected two singles, scored two runs, and drove in another.
Leckband allowed three runs on two hits to get the loss.
Isaiah Wellman and
Blake Pesante also came out of the bullpen.
George Gilson finished with three singles and one RBI. Sullivan went 2-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
