AMERICUS, Ga. – Georgia Southwestern State University swept a Peach Belt Conference baseball doubleheader from Flagler College (5-0 and 10-3) Saturday at Hurricane Stadium.
Georgia Southwestern extended its winning streak to six games and improved to 23-12 overall and 11-4 in the Peach Belt. Flagler dropped to 22-11 overall and 7-8 in conference play. The Saints head to Daytona Beach, Florida on Tuesday to face old rival Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University at 5 p.m.
In the opener, James Fordham (4-0) tossed a six-hit complete game shutout for the Hurricanes. He struck out five and induced 11 ground outs as well as seven fly outs.
Georgia Southwestern took advantage of a Flagler error in the third inning to score a pair of unearned runs. Paul Hegemen hit a two-out two-run double to right field after an error extended the inning.
The 'Canes added two more in the fifth and a single tally in the sixth.
David Hernandez collected three singles and scored two runs. Matthew Manuel went 3-for-3 with a solo home run.
Cooper Smith (3-3) scattered eight hits and allowed three earned runs as he went the distance for the Saints. He struck out three and retired 13 batters on fly outs as well as seven more on ground outs.
Tripp Davis hit two singles for the Saints.
In game two, Flagler held a 3-1 lead through three and one-half innings. The Hurricanes scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and then took advantage of a Saints miscue to plate two unearned runs in the fifth to take a 4-3 lead.
Manuel led off the fifth by reaching on an error. Daniel Hernandez followed with a walk. After
Daniel Fischer (2-2) struck out the next two batters, David Hernandez hit a two-run double to right-center to give Georgia Southwestern the lead for good.
The Hurricanes scored five more in the seventh and once more in the eighth.
Jackson Raper (4-2) scattered 11 hits and allowed one earned run to get the win. He induced 10 ground outs and got four more batters to fly out.
David Hernandez went 3-for-4 with a double, four runs batted in, and he scored a run. George Davis finished with a single, a double, scored a run, and drove in two more. Noah Roberts collected two singles and knocked in a run. Cory Lee went 2-for-4 with a double, he scored two runs, and drove in another.
Fischer took the loss on the hill for the Saints. He surrendered three earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in six-plus innings of work.
Drew Rosenberg and
Jake Hill worked in relief.
Taylor Shultz finished with three singles and two RBI.
Eli Maddox hit three singles and knocked in the other run for Flagler.
Justin Haskins collected two singles and scored a run while
George Gilson hit a pair of singles.
