DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University used a three-run fifth inning to break a scoreless tie and hung on to defeat Flagler College 5-2 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday evening at Sliwa Stadium.
Embry-Riddle improved to 18-12 overall while Flagler dropped to 22-12. The Saints host a three-game weekend series against Claflin University with the opener occurring on Friday night at 6 p.m.
AJ Marinello got things started for the Eagles in the fifth when he was hit by a pitch with one out. Matthew Coker hit a single through the right side and the next batter struck out.
Keegan Leckband came on in relief for Flagler and he walked the first batter he saw to load the bases. Robert Post followed and ripped the ball down the right field line all the way into the corner. That cleared the bases and Post took second.
Flagler plated an unearned run in the top of the sixth as
Taylor Shultz scored on a double play.
The Eagles added two more runs for insurance in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-1 lead.
Jesse Sullivan hit an RBI single up the middle for the Saints final tally.
Gunnar Harrison (3-2) scattered two hits over five scoreless innings to get the win for Embry-Riddle. He struck out four batters. Joe Balsam closed the final 1.2 innings and struck out four out of the five hitters he faced to earn the save.
Coker led the Eagles with three singles and he scored a run as well as knocking in a run.
Eli Roberts (2-1) took the loss on the hill for Flagler. He allowed two runs on two hits with six strikeouts and he walked four batters.
Steven Reiss,
Ethan Bobo, and
Parker Adams all worked in relief.
Caden Kresak collected two singles and scored a run while Gavin Ross finished with a pair of infield hits.
