GREENWOOD, S.C. - The No. 4-ranked (ITA Division II Top 50) Flagler College women's tennis team started their Peach Belt Conference slate off with a 6-1 win over Lander University Friday afternoon at the Joe Cabri Tennis Center.
Flagler moved up to 13-2 on the season while the Bearcats dropped to 8-6 overall and 0-2in conference play. The Saints take on No. 9 University of North Georgia at 11 a.m. on Saturday..
A mix in the doubles teams resulted in one win for the Saints. No. 7
Dana Heimen and
Anastasia Nikolova were the lone pair of Saints to pull in a 6-3 win against Millie Elsborg and Maria Jose Zarza.
A strong bounce back in singles led to the Saints sweeping the Bearcats.
Eryka Kruk led the charge, finishing first against Hannah Panchai 6-1 and 6-3. No. 2 Heimen followed quickly defeating Elsborg 6-4 and 6-1.
Sofia Balsera put the Saints in position to win, defeating Ella Sowman 6-2 and 6-4. The clinching point came from
Adela Latalova over Jose Zarza 6-4 and 7-5. Playing out their rounds,
Anastasia Nikolova and
Laura Jipescu found their way in the win column after their tight matches. No. 34 Nikolova had a back and fourth match, taking it 7-5 in both sets against Evelyn Altmaier. The last match of the day, Jipescu and Bailee Martin, came in a tight three set match, with Jipescu taking set two 6-0 and set three 7-5.
