COLUMBUS, Ga. –
Jordan Sheets (7-1) tossed a complete game shutout in game two while
Alyssa Hunter (11-2) scattered eight hits and allowed one earned run in the opener as Flagler College swept a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader from Columbus State University (4-3 and 3-0) Friday evening at Cougar Field.
Flagler improved to 24-9 overall and 9-2 in the Peach Belt. Columbus State dropped to 24-15 overall and 5-6 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 1 p.m. to conclude the series. The last time Flagler swept a twinbill at Columbus State was March 31, 2017 (11-5 and 2-0).
In the first game, the Saints scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-2 lead.
Emily Ricci led off by reaching on a fielding error by the Lady Cougar third baseman.
Hannah Smith followed with a single and a ground out pushed the runners to second and third.
Reese Snipes dropped down a squeeze bunt and the pitcher's flip to home was not in time to get Ricci and the ball got away allowing pinch runner
Olivia Burns to score from second base, which proved to be the game-winning run.
In the bottom of the seventh, Gracyn Gurley hit a lead-off home run to left field and the Lady Cougars trailed by one run. But Hunter retired the next three batters in a row to finish the game. She retired the last 10-of-11-batters in the game. Hunter finished with three strikeouts, including one in the seventh. She retired 10 batters on fly outs and seven more on ground outs.
Smith hit two singles for the Saints.
Julianna Franklin (12-8) allowed one earned run on seven hits with four strikeouts in the loss. She retired 11 batters on ground outs.
Nova Wright and Rylie Beddingfield each collected two singles for Columbus State.
In game two, Sheets retired 10-of-the-last-12 batters in the game to help her record her third shutout of the season.
She got all of the offense she needed in the second inning.
Jordan Moss hit a bases loaded single to center field to score one run. The Saints added two more in the seventh for insurance.
Sydney Stewart went 2-for-4 with a double while
Kyla Knier collected two singles.
Khloe Shears (2-4) took the loss for Columbus State as she allowed one run on seven hits.
Mary-Catherine Sorrell finished with a pair of singles.
