COLUMBUS, Ga. – A ground out and
Kiley McQuillan's RBI single scored two runs in the fifth inning as Flagler College edged Columbus State University 4-2 in a Peach Belt Conference softball game Saturday afternoon at Cougar Field.
Flagler improved to 25-9 overall and 10-2 in the Peach Belt. The Saints have posted their best conference record through 12 games since joining the league in 2010. Columbus State lost its fifth game in a row and dropped to 24-16 overall and 5-7 in conference play. Flagler faces USC Aiken in a three-game series starting April 5 with a doubleheader at Aiken, South Carolina.
Columbus State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 2-all.
Sydney Stewart led off the top of the fifth with a single to right-center.
Emily Ricci followed with a single to right and Stewart sprinted all the way to third. Ricci took second on the throw to third base.
Hannah Smith grounded out to second base, which allowed Stewart to score the go-ahead run and Ricci took third. McQuillan ripped a single back up the middle to plate Ricci with an insurance run.
Jordan Sheets (8-1) tossed four scoreless innings in relief and limited the Lady Cougars to one hit. She retired 11-of-the-last-12 batters.
Stephanie Daly started and allowed two runs on three hits in three-plus innings of work.
McQuillan led the Saints going 2-for-3 with a double and she drove in three runs. Smith collected two singles and one run batted in while Stewart finished 2-for-3 with a double and she scored a run.
Khloe Shears (2-5) took the loss for Columbus State. She surrendered two runs on six hits in four innings.
Mary-Catherine Sorrell had half of the Lady Cougars hits as she went 2-for-3 with a double and scored a run. Nova Wright socked a two-run home run to left field in the fourth to account for the lone CSU runs.
