ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College scored single runs in the first three innings and held on to win 4-2 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball series opener over Georgia College & State University on a brisk Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Flagler extended its winning streak to seven game to improve to 21-6 overall and 7-3 in the Peach Belt. Georgia College dropped to 15-14 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.
With the scored tied at 1-all in the bottom of the second,
George Gilson led off with a single to left and then stole second. A ground out to shortstop put runners on the corners as the shortstop for GCSU tried to get Gilson at third, but was too late. Two batters later, Gilson scored on what looked to be a double play, but
Mason Gray beat the throw to first base.
Flagler also scored a run in the third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Saints pushed across an insurance run in eighth inning on a squeeze bunt. Flagler had runners on the corners with one out
Jacob Reeves dropped down a bunt in front of the pitcher's mound and
Will Taylor slid under the tag at home plate.
Ben Stubbs (4-1) allowed one earned run and scattered five hits in seven innings of work. He fanned six batters.
Ethan Bobo collected his fifth save as he tossed a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.
Eli Maddox finished with two singles and he drove in a run.
John Luke Glanton (4-3) went the distance and allowed four runs on eight hits with six strikeouts to get the loss for the Bobcats.
Evan Cowan collected two singles and drove in a run.
