ORLANDO, Fla. - This afternoon, the No. 6-ranked (ITA Division II Top 50) Flagler College women's tennis team defeated their fifth ranked team of the season, No. 12 Angelo State University, 5-2, this afternoon at the USTA National Tennis Center.
Flagler advanced to 11-2 on the season while the Rams took their first loss of the season and dropped to 12-1.
Despite dropping the doubles point, No. 24
Dana Heimen and
Anastasia Nikolova had a major upset over No. 9 Avery Durham and Eva Schwartz in their 6-3 win. Narrowly losing in the point winning match,
Eryka Kruk and
Polya Nikolova had their match go into a tiebreak against Margaux Rene and Benedetta Raggiotti where they lost 7-6 (7-4).
In singles, the Saints and Rams had multiple tight matches, with the Saints ultimately winning five of the six. Returning to the win column for the Saints, with the first point of the day, was
Laura Jipescu over Raggiotti, 7-6 (7-5) and 6-2. Heimen remained undefeated on the day after defeating Schwartz, 6-3 and 6-4. On an upset streak,
Anastasia Nikolova took down No. 33 Rene 7-6 (7-4) and 6-3.
Adela Latalova had the matching clinching game after defeating Jessica Li in three sets. Going down early, Latalova bounced back in set two, 6-3, to force a third set where she rolled 6-1. Taking the final win of the day was Kruk against Durham in yet another three set match. Exchanging 6-3 sets, Kruk won the third set 6-4 to give the Saints their fifth point.
