Flagler’s late rally falls short at Georgia Southwestern

AMERICUS, Ga. – Josiah Shackelford recorded his first collegiate double-double with a team-high 26 points and 10 rebounds in Flagler College's 97-93 loss at Georgia Southwestern State University in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday night at The Storm Dome.

Flagler concluded the regular season with a 15-12 overall record and a 9-9 mark in the Peach Belt. The Saints are in a three-way tie for fifth place. Georgia Southwestern won its third game in a row and finished with an 11-17 overall record and 5-13 in conference play. The Hurricanes clinched the No. 8 seed in next week's conference tournament. The official bracket will be released after tomorrow's games between Columbus State University and Georgia College & State University.

Georgia Southwestern opened the second half on a 16-1 run as it took a 57-39 lead with 14:30 to go.

The Saints whittled away at the deficit and got the margin under 10 points (72-63) after a Max Hrdlicka three-pointer with 8:05 remaining. Later, a Jax Bouknight trey made it a one possession game (74-71) with 5:50 left in regulation. That basket completed a 16-4 spurt by the Saints.

It became a free throw shooting contest with under a minute left in the game. Bouknight sank two with 15 seconds left to bring Flagler to within two (93-91). The Saints couldn't get any closer.

Mason Manning finished with 16 points and he tallied five assists. Hrdlicka poured in 14 points as he made four 3-pointers. Bouknight's line at the end of the night was 11 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Jaylen Jordon, who transferred to Flagler from GSW, grabbed 10 rebounds and had nine points.

Lars Nilsen led the Hurricanes with 26 points and five rebounds. Matt Ansah tallied 20 points while Spencer Rose added 14 points and five rebounds. Antewan Webber, Jr. supplied 12 points. Josiah Shackleford tacked on 11 points and eight rebounds.
