ST. AUGUSTINE – Jagger Jefferis (3-2) allowed one run and scattered five hits as Lander University held on to defeat Flagler College 2-1 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Friday night at Drysdale Field.
Lander extended its winning streak to nine games and improved to 11-5 overall. Flagler dropped to 11-4. This was the conference opener for both teams. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Jesse Sullivan's single to right field was just enough to score
Mason Gray from second for the lone Flagler run in the eighth inning.
The Saints threatened in the ninth with runners at first and second bases with two outs. Lander closer Kurt Rogers, in his second inning of work, was able to strikeout the last batter to earn his third save of the season.
The Bearcats put the first run on the board in the third inning. Evan Wickeri led off the frame with a triple down the right field line. Connor Drove followed with a single to left-center, which plated Wickeri.
In the fourth, Taichi Nakao reached first base on an errant throw and took second on the same play. After a walk, Droze hit a fly ball deep to right field, just in front of the wall. Flagler's right fielder dropped the ball and that allowed Nakao to score.
Ben Stubbs (3-1) took the loss on the hill for Flagler. He tossed five innings and allowed one run on six hits. Stubbs fanned seven and walked four.
Keegan Leckband,
Parker Adams,
Clay Callan, and
Isaiah Wellman all tossed four scoreless innings in relief.
Wickeri went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored while Droze finished 2-for-5 with a double and one run batted in for Lander.
Taylor Shultz collected three singles for Flagler.
