SALISBURY, N.C. –
Kyla Knier and
Reese Snipes combined for 10 hits, including six doubles, one home run, 10 runs batted in, and they scored a total of four runs as Flagler College held off Frostburg State University 11-10 in the first game and then used a five-run fourth inning to defeat Catawba College 9-6 in a pair of non-conference softball games Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.
Flagler improved to 10-4 on the season. Frostburg State is 1-3 while Catawba is 8-6 overall. The Saints head coach,
Kathryn Grant, is a 2010 graduate of Catawba. Flagler closes out the weekend tournament tomorrow with a game at 9:30 a.m. against Frostburg State and then faces Converse University at 11:30 a.m.
In the opener, the Saints scored five runs in the third inning and then added another four in the top of the fifth to take a commanding 11-3 lead. The Bobcats scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to avoid the mercy rule and then erupted for six runs in the seventh, which included a grand slam, to put a scare into the Saints.
Snipes broke the school record for most doubles in a game with four. She also had four RBI and scored a run for Flagler.
Emily Ricci hit a pair of doubles and knocked in three runs. Knier and
Sydney Stewart each collected two hits, including a double, scored two runs, and had one RBI.
Kiley McQuillan collected two singles and scored two runs.
As a team, Flagler hit a program record eight doubles.
Rachel Hester (3-2) went the distance and allowed nine earned runs on eight hits to get the win.
Olivia Stetter went 3-for-4 with two home runs, including a grand slam in the seventh for Frostburg State. She knocked in seven runs. Cristina Sommerkamp finished with a pair of singles and scored a run.
Katie Chapple (0-1) took the loss in the circle. She surrendered six runs on seven hits in 2.1 innings pitched.
In game two, both teams were deadlocked at 4-all through three innings of play.
Hannah Smith came up to bat with runners on the corners and one out. Her single to center field scored
Brooke Maher from third to break the tie, then later in the inning, Knier belted a three-run home run to center to give the Saints a commanding 9-4 lead.
The Catawba College Indians scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh, but stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to end the game.
Knier was a triple shy of the cycle as she finished with four RBI. Ricci had a pair of base hits and scored twice. McQuillan singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in two more.
Morgan Hicks also had two singles and drove in another.
Alyssa Hunter (4-0) remained undefeated after allowing four runs on four hits for Flagler.
Jordan Sheets closed the game and got a save.
Kary Hales led Catawba as she went 4-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI. Grace Flynn went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI, and she scored a run.
Alex Baquie (3-3) took the loss for Catawba. She surrendered eight runs on eight hits.
