ST. AUGUSTINE – Flagler College erupted in the seventh inning with six runs while
Ben Stubbs (3-0) and
Ethan Bobo combined to strikeout 16 batters in an 8-5 victory over American International College in a non-conference baseball game on a cool Thursday evening at Drysdale Field.
Flagler won its fourth consecutive game to improve to 9-2. This was AIC's season opener. The same two teams meet tomorrow at 4 p.m.
The Saints had been held in check for the first five innings by Yellow Jacket starter Vaughn O'Leary (0-1). Flagler scored a pair of runs in the sixth, one on an RBI single by
Mason Gray and the other on a double steal with runners on the corners. Gray got into a rundown long enough for
Tripp Davis to score from third.
In the seventh, O'Leary hit a batter, got a fielder's choice, and then allowed a base hit up the middle to
Eli Maddox. Alex Perez came in to prevent any further action by Flagler. He allowed four consecutive singles and was chased from the game after allowing four runs on five hits in one-third of an inning. A two-run single by
Taylor Shultz ended the evening for Perez.
American International plated three runs in the eighth and one more in the ninth.
Stubbs racked up a career-high 12 strikeouts in 6.1 innings pitched as he won his third game. He allowed one run on four hits. Bobo allowed four runs on five hits in 2.2 innings, but earned his third save of the season.
Payton Palladino reached base all five times tonight as he had four singles, was hit by a pitch, and scored a run. Davis collected two singles and scored a pair of runs while
Jesse Sullivan added a pair of singles and scored a run. Gray, who came in as a defensive replacement in the top of the fifth, got two singles in as many at bats, drove in two runs, and scored another.
O'Leary took the loss as he allowed four runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings pitched.
Sam Tanous collected three singles, scored a run, and drove in another for AIC.
