ST. AUGUSTINE –
Payton Palladino went 6-for-8 with a pair of doubles, two runs batted in, and he scored two runs to help Flagler College sweep a non-conference baseball doubleheader from Eckerd College, 8-3 and 5-4, Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 8-2 overall while Eckerd College dropped to 2-8. The two teams will finish their four-game set tomorrow at noon.
In the opener, the Saints trailed 3-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
AJ Hunerberg got the rally started with a leadoff double and took third on a ground out. Palladino came up to bat with the bases loaded and his infield single scored Hunerberg. Later in the inning,
Taylor Shultz hit a single through the right side of the infield that gave Flagler a 4-3 lead.
The Saints took advantage of some Triton miscues to score two unearned runs in the seventh and eighth innings to preserve the win.
Cooper Smith (2-0) pitched six innings, scattered 10 hits, and allowed three runs to post the victory.
Steven Reiss finished the game and earned a save after tossing 1.1 scoreless innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Keegan Leckband and
Drew Rosenberg also worked in relief.
Palladino and
Tripp Davis each collected two singles. Palladino scored a run and drove in another while Davis had one run batted in.
Max Folkman (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief. He pitched one-third of an inning and allowed two runs.
Jordan Alzate, Ryan Gargett, and Dylan Escobar had two singles apiece.
In the second game, Flagler scored four runs in the fourth, but needed the insurance run in the seventh to hang on for the win.
Eli Maddox belted a two-out double in the seventh and Palladino followed with another double to give the Saints a 5-0 lead.
The Tritons got two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth, but couldn't get any closer.
Daniel Fischer (1-0) started and lasted 7.1 innings as he allowed two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.
Jake Hill tossed the final two-thirds of an inning to record the save.
Blake Pesante and
Isaiah Wellman also worked in relief.
Palladino went a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one RBI, and he scored a run.
Caden Kresak went 3-for-4 with a double.
Davian Giles (0-1) took the loss on the hill for Eckerd. He surrendered four runs on 10 hits in 3.2 innings.
Reid Lisle collected two singles and scored a run for the Tritons. Luis Garrido hit a single and a double while Christian Cabina collected a pair of singles.
