ST. AUGUSTINE –
Jax Bouknight tied his career high with a team-leading 24 points and he tallied six assists to help Flagler College edge the University of North Georgia 88-84 in a Peach Belt Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at Flagler Gym.
Flagler improved to 11-7 overall and 5-4 in the Peach Belt. North Georgia fell to 13-8 overall and 5-4 in conference play. The Saints go back out on the road and face USC Aiken on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Flagler forced 15 North Georgia turnovers, which led to 30 points.
The Saints held an 84-74 lead with 41 seconds left to go. But the Nighthawks scrapped and made it a one possession game (87-84) with a little over one second to go in regulation.
Jaylen Jordon made the second of two free throws with 1.3 seconds left to seal the win.
The game featured nine ties and 17 lead changes. No team held a lead larger than 10 points. A 16-0 run by the Saints midway through the second half eliminated an eight-point Nighthawk lead. Bouknight's old-fashioned three-point play gave Flagler the lead for good (68-67) with 5:45 left to go.
Josiah Shackelford added 18 points and five rebounds for the Saints.
Mason Manning finished with 15 points while
Trevur Smalls came off the bench to tally a season-high 12 points as he was a perfect 5-for-5 from the field and made both free throw attempts. Jordon was a rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine boards.
AJ White scored a game-high 34 points to lead North Georgia. Chris Cole added 11 points and Cayden Charles was the only other Nighthawk in double-figures with 10. Colin Turner grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
