ST. AUGUSTINE –
Payton Palladino led a 13-hit attack going 2-for-4 with a double and three runs batted in to help Flagler College defeat The University of Alabama in Huntsville 10-1 in a college baseball mutual season opener Friday evening at Drysdale Field in head coach
Greg Guilliams' first game leading the program.
This was Flagler's first season opening win since 2020 when it defeated then-No. 4 Central Missouri University, 4-2, on Jan. 31 at the Houston Winter Invitational.
The Saints scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Taylor Shultz led off the inning with a single and after the next two batters were retired,
Caden Kresak hit a line drive that UAH second baseman Brodee Bartlett jumped and had the ball deflect off his glove and it went into right-center.
Eli Maddox followed with a double to the right-center gap.
Flagler added two runs in the bottom of the third inning on back-to-back RBI singles by
Tripp Davis and
Tyler McClanahan.
The Saints scored a single run in the fourth, two in the seventh, and three more in the eighth.
Ben Stubbs (1-0) tossed five innings, scattered three hits, allowed one run, and struck out four batters to earn the win.
Ethan Bobo pitched four scoreless innings in relief and had three strikeouts to earn the save.
Will Noles and Jackson Lindsey each collected two hits for the Chargers.
Ty Hutto took the loss on the hill for UAH. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in four innings of work.
The same two teams meet tomorrow in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
