Flagler drops two at Florida Tech

MELBOURNE, Fla.- Flagler College volleyball took two losses on the road at Florida Tech, Friday evening. Barry University took the first match 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-14) with the host team taking the second match 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 31-29, 25-17) at the Clemente Center.

The Saints fell to 4-5 on the season. The Buccaneers improved to 7-0 while the Panthers moved to 6-3.

Flagler and Barry went back and forth in the first set with a three-point run at the end favoring the Buccaneers for the 25-22 set win. The set featured eight ties and four lead changes. The second set was much of the same until Barry took the 20-19 lead and never let up for the 25-21 win. There were 10 ties and six lead changes in thsat set. The final set was controlled by the Buccaneers, 25-14.

Jordan Berglin led the squad with seven kills. Molly Boyd was right behind her with six kills and a .462 hitting percentage. Clare Sheedy nabbed the double-double, her third of the season with 18 assists and 12 digs. Lexi Basler had nine digs. At the net, Flagler tallied one solo block coming from Colby Stempkowski and eight block assists. Boyd, Sheedy and Stempkowski accounted for six of the block assists with two each.

Diana Akopova led Barry with 19 kills and eight digs. 

Flagler started off the second match of the day with a 25-21 set win against Florida Tech. The edge in the first set came on a three-point run when the Saints took the 19-18 lead. The Panthers took the second set 25-19 with the biggest difference coming when Florida Tech tied the game at 15 then went on a six-point run. The third set was a marathon for both squads with Florida Tech taking it 31-29. The set had 11 ties and six lead changes. The Panthers offense came out heavy in the fourth set, 25-17.

Berglin again was the leading force in the offense for Flagler with 13 kills. She added 15 digs to complete her second double-double of the season. Gracie Fleming added nine. Cassidy Bloom and Boyd both added seven kills to round out the offensive leaders. Sheedy snagged 37 assists just three shy of her season high. Basler led the defensive effort with 16 digs. Bloom added seven digs with Sheedy adding six. The Saints had 12 block assists and two solo blocks. Berglin and Boyd accounted for the solo blocks and two block assists each. Fleming had quite the day at the net with four block assists to lead the team.

Cordelia Kearns notched a double-double for Florida Tech with a match-high 26 kills and 15 digs. Jeanne Hassoun added 25 assists, nine digs, and five service aces.
