ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College softball team fell in both games against No. 25 Nova Southeastern University on Tuesday at Flagler Field. Game one ended in a run-rule victory for the Sharks 11-2 and game two ended after seven innings at 11-10.
Nova Southeastern was first on the board with two runs scored in the top of the first on a two-run homer. The Saints added their first run shortly after in the bottom of the first.
Emily Ricci was hit by a pitch and
Hannah Smith followed that with a walk to make it runners on first and second.
Sydney Stewart scored Ricci on an RBI single down the left field line.
The Sharks added another run in the top of the second and the Saints retaliated with a solo homer from
Kyla Knier to start off the bottom of the second. Two more runs came in the top of the third for NSU, one in the top of the fifth and five more in the top of the sixth to extend their lead and take game one 11-2.
In game two, Nova Southeastern took an early lead but Flagler to put in a late push to only fall by one run. The Sharks scored their first two runs in the top of the first and the Saints added three of their own in the bottom of the first. Three walks in a row made it bases loaded with one out for Flagler with
Rylee Konowalchuk up to bat. She connected for a single through the left side that scored
Hannah Smith and
Sydney Stewart. An infield single from
Reese Snipes brought
Mackenzie Smith to make it 3-2 for the Saints.
NSU tied things up in the top of the second and by the top of the fourth had extended their lead to 9-3.
Hannah Smith sent a ball over right center for a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth. A two-out single by Konowalchuk scored Stewart to put the Saints down by four runs. In the bottom of the fifth,
Kiersten James knocked a homer over right center. The bottom of the sixth saw two more runs for the Saints that put them one run behind the Sharks. A triple from
Mackenzie Smith scored Stewart and a fielder's choice allowed
Olivia Burns to score.
Nova Southeastern added two more runs in the top of the seventh to make it 11-8. Back-to-back singles for the Saints put them one run behind and bases loaded. The game ended in an 11-10 victory for the Sharks.
The Saints face USC Aiken in a weekend series at Flagler Field on April 13-14.
