ST. AUGUSTINE – The Flagler College softball team split the day with USC Aiken in their doubleheader to start off the weekend series. The Saints fell in game one 5-3 but took game two 2-0 over the Pacers.
The Pacers were the first on the board in game one with three runs scored in the top of the first. The first run for the Saints came in the bottom of the third on a lead-off solo homer from
Cassidy Crump. USC Aiken and Flagler both added a run in the fourth inning. A solo home run over left center from
Kyla Knier put Flagler down by two. The Pacers added their final run in the top of the fifth, scoring on a wild pitch. Crump knocked her second homer of the day in the bottom of the seventh to make it 5-3, but it was not enough for the Saints and the Pacers took game one.
In game two, the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back walks from
Mackenzie Smith and
Rylee Konowalchuk put the Saints in scoring position.
Paige Maseda connected on a double to right center to score both runners and make it 2-0. The Flagler defense held strong and did not allow the Pacers to score, taking the second game in a 2-0 victory.
Rachel Hester (5-4) earned the win for the Saints after pitching a complete game. She faced 28 batters and only allowed three hits, while striking out nine.
The Saints will finish their series against USC Aiken on Sunday (April 14) at 12 p.m. at Flagler Field.
