Saints drop a doubleheader to the Bearcats

GREENWOOD, S.C. – Flagler College got swept in a Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader by Lander University, 8-1 and 3-0, Saturday afternoon at Doug Spears Field.

Flagler is now 28-16 overall and 11-7 in the Peach Belt. Lander improved to 27-11 overall and is 11-7 in league play. Flagler hosts Nova Southeastern University on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Flagler Field.

In the opener, Sydney Stewart led off the game with a home run to left field. With that home run, she broke the program's single-season runs scored record with 49. Alona Personius held the mark with 48 in 2011. Stewart had Flagler's other hit, a single, in the third inning.

That would be it for the Saints offense in the game as Lander's Taylor Scott (11-5) went the distance and allowed the one run on two hits with four strikeouts and five walks.

The Bearcats plated two unearned runs in the third inning on back-to-back singles by Logan Coward and Gracie Derrick. Lander added two more runs in the fourth, and four more in the fifth.

Emily Allen went 3-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and she had two runs batted in. Coward added a pair of singles and drove in a run while Derrick had two singles, scored a run, and drove in another.

Dakota Kulis (3-5) took the loss in the circle for the Saints. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Kulis tied her season high with five strikeouts. Madelyn Wise finished the game.

In game two, Kamryn Akins (1-0) tossed a three-hit shutout with a pair of walks and strikeouts.

She got all of the offense she needed in the fourth inning when pinch runner Kaitlyn DeFranco scored on a fielder's choice to give Lander a 1-0 lead. The Bearcats added single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings.

Derrick went 2-for-3 with a double and Abbie Behe collected two singles and knocked in a run.

Rachel Hester (4-3) scattered eight hits and allowed three runs in six innings for the Saints. She walked four and fanned four.

Mackenzie Smith hit a double while Emily Ricci and Kiersten James each hit a single.
