GREENWOOD, S.C. – The Flagler College softball team took down Lander University in a 14-5 run-rule victory with 10 runs scored in the second inning.
Lander was first to cross the plate with three runs scored in the bottom of the first, but Flagler responded immediately with runs of their own.
Rylee Konowalchuk led the top of the second with a single to left center and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from
Jordan Moss. Bases were loaded after
Paige Maseda drew a walk and
Sydney Stewart singled to right field to advance both runners. The first run scored after
Emily Ricci was hit by a pitch that walked Konowalchuk in and the second came after
Hannah Smith drew a bases loaded walk. A two-RBI single by
Cassidy Crump took the lead 4-3 for the Saints.
Hannah Smith scored on a single through the right side by
Kyla Knier and a three-run homer by
Mackenzie Smith made it 8-3.
Jordan Moss scored the final runs of the inning with a two-run homer down the left field line.
In the top of the third, Flagler had runners on second and third with Knier up to bat. A single through the left side scored
Hannah Smith and Crump stole home to make it 12-3. Konowalchuk connected on a double to left center that scored Knier. The final run of the game came in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from
Hannah Smith that scored Maseda.
The Saints finished the game in five innings after the Bearcats added two more runs, ending the game 14-5 in a victory for Flagler.
Jordan Sheets (12-6) earned the win for Flagler after pitching 4.1 innings and facing 25 batters.
The Saints will finish the series against Lander on Saturday (April 6) at Doug Spears Field.
