Sand Sharks use a five-run ninth to defeat Saints

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. – Nikko Andre's pinch-hit bases-clearing double ended the game in the ninth inning as USC Beaufort rallied to defeat Flagler College 9-8 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at the Richard Gray Sports Complex.

Flagler won the three-game series and leaves with a 22-22 overall record, including a 13-11 mark in the Peach Belt. USC Beaufort is now 12-28 overall and 7-17 in conference play. Up next for the Saints is Palm Beach Atlantic University on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Drysdale Field.

Flagler held an 8-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth and Blake Pesante (4-1) came in to wrap up the game. After retiring the lead-off hitter, the next four Sand Sharks hit singles, which produced one run. Seth Robinson drew a bases loaded walk and USCB trailed 8-6. Andre followed and hit a 1-2 pitch to right-center to unload the bases.

The Saints used a three-run eighth to get to that 8-4 lead. Jesse Sullivan drove in a run on a ground out and Taylor Clapp hit a two-run single to center.

Aidan Cooper (4-1) earned the win in relief for the Sand Sharks. He pitched a scoreless ninth as he only allowed a walk.

Gage Kirkland collected three singles and scored a run for USCB. Brian Meyer hit two singles, scored a run, and drove in another. Justin Galassi went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run. Mack Cromer also went 2-for-4 with a double, but he scored two runs, and had one run batted in.

Pesante took the loss for the Saints as he allowed five runs on five hits in one-third of an inning. Benjamin Stubbs started and tossed five innings, allowing two runs on four hits. He tied his career high with eight strikeouts.

Mason Gray collected three singles, scored two runs, and he knocked in a run for Flagler. Clapp finished with two singles and two RBI while Bryce Fitzgerald went 2-for-4 with a double and he scored a run.
