HARDEEVILLE, S.C. –
Cooper Smith (6-4) scattered six hits over eight scoreless innings as Flagler College shutout the University of South Carolina Beaufort 7-0 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at the Richard Gray Sports Complex.
Flagler improved to 22-21 overall and 13-10 in the Peach Belt. The Saints have won six of their last seven games. USC Beaufort dropped to 11-28 overall and 6-17 in conference play. The same two teams meet tomorrow for the last game of the series at 1 p.m.
Smith struck out five batters and induced 12 grounds outs as well as six more fly outs. He only allowed four base runners to reach scoring position.
Parker Adams struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth.
Flagler wasted little time getting on the scoreboard.
Trey Newland led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a bunt.
Jesse Sullivan's single to right scored Newland.
Bryce Fitzgerald added a two-run single in the sixth inning and the Saints added a single tally in the seventh and three more in the ninth.
Donovan Garcia collected three singles, scored two runs, and he had one run batted in. Newland went 3-for-5 with a triple and he scored a run. Fitzgerald finished with a pair of singles and had three RBI.
Brandon Martin (2-5) allowed three runs on eight hits in 5.2 innings in the loss. He fanned seven batters.
Brian Meyer led the Sand Sharks with a pair of singles.
