ST. AUGUSTINE – Phillip Ard's home run to lead off the fourth inning proved to be the game-winning hit as the University of North Georgia defeated Flagler College 3-1 in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Sunday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
North Georgia salvaged the last game of the series to improve to 27-14 overall and 14-7 in conference play. Flagler won the series and is now 19-21 overall and 11-10 in conference play. Up next for the Saints is Rollins College on Tuesday, at Winter Park, Florida, at 3 p.m.
The Nighthawks scored one run in the first and added two more in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead. Josh Sosa singled home Riley Frost for the second run in the fourth inning.
Daniel Courtney (5-1) held the Saints bats in check as he scattered three hits and allowed just one run over six innings. He induced nine fly outs and seven ground outs. Pierce Williams picked up his first save of the year after tossing three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.
Flagler got its lone run in the sixth inning as
Payton Palladino hit a leadoff triple to left-center and then scored on
Jaxson Wentworth's sacrifice fly. Palladino finished with two hits on the day.
Benjamin Stubbs (3-2) took the loss for the Saints after surrendering three runs on seven hits, but he did strike out four batters.
Isaiah Wellman tossed three scoreless innings in relief.
Ard went 2-for-3 with the home run and two runs batted in for North Georgia. Noah Darden collected two singles.
