ST. AUGUSTINE –
Cooper Smith (5-4) turned in a solid performance on the mound as he allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts in eight innings of work to help lead Flagler College to a 5-2 win over the University of North Georgia in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Flagler improved to 19-20 overall and 11-9 in the Peach Belt. The Saints have won 11-of-the-last-12 games at home against the Nighthawks. North Georgia fell to 26-14 overall and 13-7 in conference play. The two teams meet tomorrow at noon in the final game of the series.
Smith had a perfect game going for the first 3.1 innings of work until he gave up a pair of singles. He retired 11-of-the-last-13 batters he faced. Smith induced 11 ground outs and six fly outs.
Jake Hill retired all three batters in the ninth inning, including two strikeouts, to earn his first collegiate save.
Flagler jumped on North Georgia starter Wes Lott (7-1) early and often.
Jesse Sullivan's single to center field in the first inning scored
Trey Newland from second base to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Newland and Sullivan added RBI singles in second and then
Taylor Clapp hit a two-run single to give Flagler a 5-0 lead. The Saints sent nine men to the plate in the second inning.
Riley Frost hit a two-run double for the Nighthawks in the fourth inning, but got thrown out trying to advance to third on the throw to the plate.
Lott lasted just two innings and allowed five runs on nine hits to take the loss for North Georgia.
Newland led the Saints attack going 3-for-4 with a double, he scored two runs, and knocked in another to go along with a stolen base.
Riley Fitzgerald collected three singles and scored a run. Sullivan singled twice and had two runs batted in while
Matthew Burke finished with a pair of singles and he scored a run.
Noah Darden and Phillip Ard each hit a single and scored a run for North Georgia.
