ST. AUGUSTINE – A five-run first inning was all that Columbus State University needed in a 10-1 victory over Flagler College in a Peach Belt Conference baseball game Saturday afternoon at Drysdale Field.
Columbus State improved to 13-9 overall and 3-2 in the Peach Belt. Flagler is now 8-12 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The final game of the series is at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
The Cougars strung together four straight hits to produce two runs, both coming on Derek Wylie's single. A dropped fly ball in right field led to three more unearned runs.
Columbus State added runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings.
The Saints pushed across its lone run in the bottom of the seventh.
Zach Thomas led off with a single up the middle. Two more singles loaded the bases and a fielder's choice plated Thomas.
Johnny Dow (4-1) threw an economical 86 pitches as he scattered six hit and allowed one run in seven innings on the hill. Dow fanned four and induced 10 fly outs and seven more ground outs.
Cody Ferguson finished with five singles and scored three runs to pace the Cougars attack. Wylie went 2-for-5 with a double, a run scored, and two runs batted in.
Cooper Smith (3-2) took the loss on the mound for Flagler. He surrendered 11 hits and three earned runs in four innings of work.
Mason Gray collected two singles.
